Do I Still Need a Doula if I’m Having a Hospital Birth?
Maybe you’ve heard that doulas are only for “crunchy” home birth mamas? Maybe you think that doulas get in the way or that the hospital staff doesn’t like them? Or my favorite, “I’m getting an epidural right away, so I don’t need a doula!”
Let’s start with defining what is a doula? The translation from the Greek word doula is “a woman who serves”. Most of us are non-medical professionals who give you emotional and physical support through your pregnancy, labor and postpartum. We discuss your birth plan goals, provide you with prenatal education, on call support through the last few weeks of pregnancy, continuous labor support, immediate postpartum (golden hour) support, lactation education and so much more. It is a relationship built on trust and love.
Now, what does the science tell us about having a doula? In an article published in “The National Library of Medicine,” titled “The Effect of Doulas on Maternal and Birth Outcomes: A Scoping Review” found:
“Doulas have been found to reduce cesarean section frequency, low birth weight, and premature labor. Evidence shows that decreased cesarean sections have led to better outcomes for the mother and the child. Doula intervention has also been correlated with a decrease in epidural use during delivery, increased rates of breastfeeding, and the use of safety precautions for the child. The advocacy that doulas provide can increase well-being and satisfaction concerning the birthing process, and it provides education and support. This support may reduce mental health morbidities, such as PTSD, in mothers without a support system.” (Copyright © 2023, Sobczak et al.)
So, the answer is, YES. If you are giving birth in a hospital-hire a doula. If you want an epidural right away-hire a doula. If you want to feel advocated for and confident-hire a doula. The ultimate goal is to provide doulas for every woman who wants one.
